in the Making…
May 31 - July 27, 2024
Maine Museum of Photographic Arts, Portland ME
In the Making is a provocative exhibition that illustrates where the photographic medium is today. There are sculptures, camera-less works, multimedia constructions, collaborative pieces and an installation. Our hope is that viewers will delight in the craftsmanship, the use of line/drawing throughout, and the variety of alternative processes. The themes will be familiar: family, conservation, art for art’s sake and the intuitive exploration of photography. To say this is an exciting exhibit would be to understate our enthusiasm about it. Come and bring people with you who want to delve into and learn more about contemporary artists and works. - Denise Froehlich, Director of MMPA
Several of my images from Spin Club Tapestry will be on display.

March 22 - April 27, 2024
Filter Space, Chicago IL
Juror: Sarah Kennel, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
From the juror’s statement:
“We are inundated on the daily with an ocean of images, yet the clarity, finesse, and power of the photographs in Context 2024 speak to a collective desire for making work that means something, that can cut across the blaring noise. Across portraiture, documentary, landscape, and experimental work, the artists in this exhibition show us that in these troubled and troubling times, photography retains the capacity to reveal, to connect, to delight, and to bear witness, even as the medium continues to evolve and shape-shift. “ –Sarah Kennel
Book Review | Spin Club Stories
Float Magazine, March 2024
Float Magazine published a thoughtful review about my book “Spin Club Stories., written by Branden Zavaleta.
From the review:
"To memorialize the women and lifestyles of this village is the key interest of Spin Club Stories. Just as their woven work would have been inherited by daughters, Reischwitz passes these images down to us. In one of the more strikingly symbolic images, a woven hand reaches out for an image of two hands cupping a warm light. It’s hard not to see this as a hand reaching out across generations, a passing of the torch across time.”

Episode #58, May 2023
Listen to my conversation with J. Sybylla Smith about my work for Spin Club Stories. Among other things, we discuss embroidery as a connective element, rediscovering culture, and memory as a key to the future.
Episode Notes: “ Spin Club Stories is a mixed-media reintegration of history, environment, society and self in an interactive dialog spanning centuries. Reclaiming the artform and impact of women’s handiwork, Astrid assembles collages of images and textiles, perforated with hand embroidery. Sourced from family heirlooms, she figuratively empowers her ancestors—and ultimately herself—to transform the future.”

Ties That Bind | Threaded Narratives at Griffin Museum of Photography
Excerpt from the review:
“In her series Spin Club Tapestry, Reischwitz skips back generations to craft something akin to family quilts that honor her origins in rural Germany. In each work, she pieces together vintage pictures of her ancestors and their embroidered domestic fabrics handed down through generations with her own evocative imagery, connecting their stories to hers.”
